Sinkor, Monrovia – A number of Liberian United Methodists have stage a protest, calling for the Liberia Annual Conference to be immediately and completely removed from the United Methodist Church’s global conference due to the organization’s decision to lift the prohibition against LGBTQ culture.
The disenchantment of the UMC members came after the Global United Methodist Church approved the lifting of its prohibition on LGBTQ clergy and gave its pastors permission to perform same-sex weddings. According to reports, 692 delegates supported the repeal during the general conference that was held in the US in May of this year, with at least 51 delegates opting to maintain the ban.

The Global Conference recently made a resolution that suggested regionalization, but the United Methodist Church in Liberia has not yet officially stated its opinion on the matter. This implies that each region will continue to be affiliated with the Methodist Church while worshiping in a setting that suits its culture.
Those resentful Methodists, however, firmly felt that the worldwide conference’s stance violated both Christian theology and Liberian Methodist tradition.
They went on to say that because holy matrimony is a revered institution with divine origin, homosexuality is evil and United Methodists in Liberia should not condone it.
Meanwhile, Bishop Samuel J. Quire of the Liberia UMC addressing the press following the concerns Asserted that the church has not reached any decision to perform same-sex marriage, as speculated by some of its members.
He warned members of the UMC Liberia to refrain from undermining the progress of the church through their action regarding the misleading information.
