Buster Johnson, an Affiliate of opposition Liberty Party
Congo Town, Monrovia– Liberia – Buster Johnson, a affiliate member to a political party on Wednesday April 12 protested against corruption and poor governance, has narrowly escaped an alleged assassination attempt, raising concerns for his safety and calling for immediate government protection.
Johnson, a participant in the protest as a social justice advocate and an affiliate member of the opposition Liberty Party, said he was attacked by unknown individuals on Saturday April 15, 2023 at night in the Old Road community , just two days after they led a large protest in the principal street of Monrovia.
The demonstration, mainly attended by youth, demanded action against corruption, economic hardship, systemic injustices, rape, and ricticatice killing in Liberia.
Speaking to The People Newspaper, Johnson recounted the harrowing experience, revealing that he was accosted by unidentified men as he approached his home.
“They tried to kill me right before reaching my house,” Johnson said. “Thankfully, my neighbors recognized my voice and came to my rescue. The attackers fled immediately.”
Later that night, around 2:00 a.m., Johnson reported hearing suspicious movements outside his window, prompting him to alert the Liberia National Police. “After those two incidents, I no longer feel safe in this country. My family has even urged me to leave until after the election if I love my life and family,” he added.
Johnson has since appealed to President Weah and the Liberia National Police for protection, expressing deep concern over his safety as a Liberian
He also called for a swift and thorough investigation into the attack and urged authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
His house mate, Prince Kamara, confirmed the threats, describing a failed break-in attempt at their residence. “We didn’t sleep at all last night. The attackers tried hard to force their way in, but our iron door and window bars helped us. We called the police, but they never showed up,” Kamara told The People Newspaper.
A visit to the scene by our Reporter revealed signs of forced entry on both the door and window. However, the exact tools used remain unknown.
The Liberia National Police, when contacted, confirmed receiving a report of an assassination attempt against Johnson.
According to their spokesperson, Sam Collins said the incident has been registered at the Zone three(3) Police Station in Congo town, and an investigation is underway.
The police have also reiterated their commitment to protecting all citizens, regardless of political or social affiliations.
Johnson remains a prominent critic of government corruption, often appearing on radio to demand accountability from public officials.
He has consistently reminded the public of President George M Weah declaration that the country is open to investment and pledged to tackle entrenched corruption, in his first speech to the nation since decisively winning an election a promise he believes has not been fulfilled.
As investigations continue, Johnson says he will remain cautious but committed to the cause of justice and accountability in Liberia something he will do from an unknown location.
