Monrovia – Nimba County Representative Musa Hassan Bility has publicly urged President Joseph Boakai not to seek re-election in 2029, saying the 84-year-old leader should focus on fixing Liberia’s crisis now instead of chasing another term.
In an open letter released Saturday, August 22, 2026, the CMC Standard Bearer delivered the most direct challenge yet to the President’s political future.
“At the next election, President Boakai will be 84 years old. By the end of another six-year term, he would be 91,” Bility wrote. “The Presidency requires strength and daily pressure that may not be sustainable.”
He urged the President to “protect his image by refusing to seek re-election.”
Bility painted a grim picture of the country under Boakai’s leadership. He said Liberia is struggling, with national reconciliation stalled, the economy failing to meet expectations, and a drug crisis that has “overtaken development and good governance.”
The lawmaker also took aim at how the government is run. He criticized what he called the “centralization of government between the Presidency and security agencies,” and said the Ministry of Information has been left to “explain decisions that the government has not made clear.”
Beyond the age issue, Bility is demanding tough action. He called for an independent investigation into recent drug seizures in Liberia, and for sweeping reforms of the Legislature, national security, and the electoral system.
President Boakai, who won the 2023 election at age 78, has not responded to Bility’s letter as of Sunday evening.
The call puts pressure on the Unity Party government just three years into its first term, as public frustration grows over drugs, the economy, and governance.
