Monrovia, Liberia – Speaker of the House of Representatives, J. Fonati Koffa, has issued a public statement in response to widespread media reports and social media discussions suggesting his imminent resignation. While acknowledging the public’s concern and media speculation, Speaker Koffa emphasized his continued respect for the rule of law and his commitment to a transparent transition process, if necessary.

“I have become aware of statements circulating on social and other media platforms that make insinuations regarding my position,” Speaker Koffa stated. “While I am deeply touched by the outpouring of concern for my personal well-being and the integrity of the office I hold, I wish to address these matters with clarity and transparency.”

The Speaker underscored the importance of legal processes in resolving the ongoing impasse within the legislature. Referring to the recent Supreme Court ruling on the matter, he affirmed that the decision has conclusively addressed the issue and that he fully respects the Court’s judgment.

In his statement, Speaker Koffa confirmed that he is currently consulting with key stakeholders, including legislative colleagues across party lines, about the way forward and any possible transition from his position. “I commit to keeping the public informed as these discussions progress,” he said. “In the meantime, I urge all citizens to refrain from amplifying unsubstantiated claims that risk fostering unnecessary confusion or division.”

This clarification follows earlier reports from several media outlets alleging that Speaker Koffa had already submitted a resignation letter through former President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, who was identified in reports as a neutral and respected figure due to her lack of political ambition and regional engagement via ECOWAS.

According to those reports, the resignation proposal included provisions for Speaker Koffa to receive all outstanding salaries and benefits, while also restoring pay to previously suspended representatives. Additionally, it was suggested that former President Sirleaf would present the resignation letter to the Chief Clerk of the 55th Legislature before the House reconvenes on May 13, 2025.

The same reports noted that Deputy Speaker Thomas P. Fallah would temporarily preside over the House and lead the body toward a speakership election within sixty days, in accordance with legislative rules.

However, Speaker Koffa’s official statement neither confirmed nor denied the specifics of these reports, focusing instead on reaffirming due process, unity, and adherence to national laws.

As Liberia awaits further developments, the Speaker’s promise of transparency and legal conformity is likely to play a critical role in shaping the next steps within the House of Representatives.
