Monrovia, Liberia — The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has thrown its full support behind the association’s president, Cllr. Bonor M. Varmah, following his outspoken statement on the Supreme Court’s recent ruling in the Amended Bill of Information filed by embattled House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and others.
During an extraordinary session held Wednesday, the NEC — composed of presidents of the 15 county bar associations and nationally elected officials of the LNBA — voted overwhelmingly to affirm Varmah’s April 29 statement, praising it as both timely and necessary. The statement, which directly critiqued the Court’s handling of the matter, sparked intense public debate and drew attention to broader concerns about judicial independence and constitutional governance in Liberia.
Describing the president’s stance as “unified, purposeful, and radical,” the NEC signaled a clear pivot toward a more assertive and reform-minded Bar. “The statement reflects the values and foundational principles of the Bar as a defender of justice and the rule of law,” the Council noted.
Legal observers see this move as a bold endorsement of principled dissent in a judiciary often perceived as politically entangled. The NEC acknowledged that the president’s remarks have provoked critical national conversations, which it welcomed as part of a maturing democracy.
The Council reaffirmed Cllr. Varmah’s authority as the Bar’s chief spokesperson and urged all legal professionals, judicial actors, and the Liberian public to rally behind his leadership in the pursuit of accountability and integrity in public governance.
With this endorsement, the LNBA appears poised to take on a stronger watchdog role, committed to speaking truth to power — even when it involves the highest court in the land.
