PUL Welcomes Supreme Court Clarity on House Leadership Dispute

Monrovia — The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has weighed in on the intensifying power struggle within the House of Representatives, following a recent Supreme Court ruling that addressed attempts to remove House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.

In a statement released Wednesday, the PUL welcomed what it described as “crucial legal clarity” from the country’s highest court. The ruling came in response to an Amended Bill of Information filed by Speaker Koffa, amid ongoing efforts by a majority bloc in the House to unseat him.

While not taking sides in the political battle, the PUL emphasized that the Court’s decision affirmed the need to resolve internal legislative conflicts within the bounds of the Constitution. “The Supreme Court has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to upholding the rule of law without bias, fear or favor,” the Union noted.

The PUL called on members of the House to fully respect the ruling and to shift the conversation toward a constitutional resolution of the dispute. “Continued infighting threatens to derail Liberia’s progress and peace,” the Union warned.

Reflecting its role as a watchdog and advocate for democracy, the PUL echoed recent calls by ECOWAS mediators that any effort to remove the Speaker must follow established legal procedures. The Union criticized what it called a “cycle of contention and authoritarian behavior” and urged lawmakers to act with “integrity and a profound sense of national responsibility.”

The statement also issued a pointed reminder to President Joseph Boakai and other branches of government. The PUL cautioned against engaging with any “parallel leadership structure” within the House that lacks constitutional legitimacy, arguing that such moves could undermine the authority of the Supreme Court.
