Monrovia — The leadership of the House of Representatives majority Bloc, through current Self-styled Speaker Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, Sr., has issued a fiery response to the Supreme Court’s April 23 judgment declaring that Hon. J. Fonati Koffa remains the rightful Speaker.
In a strongly worded statement, Rep. Koon denounced the ruling as an “atrocious and audacious violation” of Liberia’s separation of powers doctrine. He insisted that Koffa was legally and constitutionally removed by a two-thirds majority vote in accordance with Article 49 of the Constitution and Rule 9(a) of the House Rules.
Koffa was ousted on allegations of corruption, conflict of interest, and mismanagement. Majority Bloc Speaker Koon emphasized that due process was followed, referencing the precedent set in Snowe v. House of Representatives (2007). He maintained that no member who voted for Koffa’s removal filed a motion for reconsideration, solidifying the decision.
“The Supreme Court cannot and will not erase this Resolution from the annals of the House,” Koon stated, rejecting any attempt by the judiciary to reinstate Koffa or interfere with legislative autonomy.
He further affirmed that the House will not recognize Koffa in any leadership capacity and will continue legislative duties, including the enforcement of the 2025 National Budget, without regard to the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Koon concluded by assuring the public that the House is exploring all legal and political options to defend its independence and uphold governance in Liberia.
This clash marks a dramatic test of the balance of powers in Liberia, as tensions rise between the nation’s legislative and judicial branches.
