LNBA’s National Secretary General, Bornor M. Varmah Elected Vice President of West African Bar Association, Urging ECOWAS Member States to Uphold Democratic Credentials

Monrovia, Liberia – The Liberia National Bar Association has endorsed the appointment of Secretary General Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah as Vice President of the West African Bar.

The LNBA in a Press Release on Tuesday July 2, 2024, says that its unwavering and unequivocal stance on enhancing a pragmatic rule of law regime in West Africa has again been validated.

According to the LNBA, Cllr. Varmah’s elevation came when the West African Bar Association held an annual conference, which was attended by various sub-regional Bar Associations, WABA Secretariat, UNOWAS, and UN System partners, discussing the role of lawyers in fostering democratic and peaceful societies.

At the climax of the gathering, the WABA constitution was adopted, establishing a new executive committee from three sub-regional language groups. Ousmane Bouba Traore, Bornor M. Varmah, and Adesina Adegbite were elected as president, vice president, and secretary general.

The West African Bar Association, established in 2004, consists of leading lawyers and bar council members in the sub-region. Its primary role is to mobilize legal luminaries to promote democratic consolidation, good governance, sustainable peace, and development in the region.

Meanwhile, the Liberia National Bar Association President Cllr. Sylvester D. Rennie has returned from the United States of America following his participation in the Justice and the Rule of Law Global Forum, organized by the world Bank’s Governance Global practice. The occasion brought together over 200 partners, leaders, and practitioners from government and judiciaries, private sector, academia, civil society, and other international development organizations working in areas of justice and rule of law.

At the meeting in Washington DC, the LNBA National President reaffirmed the Bar’s continues collaborations with the Bank to enhance global rule of law.

The Bar revealed that the World Bank and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel fully sponsored the cost of their two recent travels to Washington DC and Cotonou, Benin Republic.
