LACC Chairperson Cllr, Alexandria Zoe Decries Insufficient Prosecution Lawyers as a Major Factor Affecting Speedy Trial at the Institution

Monrovia, Liberia – The chairperson of the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), Cllr. Alexandria Zoe, has identified the shortage of prosecution lawyers as a major factor affecting the speedy trial of corruption cases at the institution.

Speaking at MICAT regular press briefing on Thursday, June 6, 2024, Cllr. Zoe highlighted the challenges faced by the LACC in prosecuting corrupt officials, citing a lack of qualified lawyers to handle complex corruption cases. She emphasized the need for more specialized prosecutors to effectively tackle corruption in the country.

According to Cllr. Zoe, the shortage of prosecution lawyers has resulted in delays in the trial process, as cases are often postponed due to the unavailability of legal counsel. She pointed out that this not only hinders the progress of corruption cases but also undermines the credibility of the LACC in the eyes of the public.

In response to this issue, Cllr. Zoe has called on the government to prioritize the recruitment and training of prosecution lawyers to strengthen the capacity of the LACC in prosecuting corruption cases. She stressed the importance of investing in the legal sector to ensure that corrupt officials are held accountable for their actions.

Overall, Cllr. Alexandria Zoe’s remarks shed light on the pressing need for more prosecution lawyers to address the backlog of corruption cases and improve the efficiency of the LACC in fighting against corruption in Liberia.
