Monrovia, Liberia – Edward W. Appleton Jr., the political leader of the Grassroots Development Movement (GDM), has addressed widespread rumors characterizing him as a disruptive “ghost” in the October 10 general elections. In a press conference held on Tuesday, October 24, Mr. Appleton pushed back against these claims, emphasizing that the GDM’s third-place finish in the elections was no surprise to him. He attributed their performance to their approach of engaging directly with rural Liberians and delivering their messages, which resonated positively with the people.

Appleton firmly stated that the GDM had not made a decision to endorse either of the two leading political parties participating in the runoff, despite ongoing negotiations with both the CDC and UP. He asserted that such a decision would require wisdom and consultation with their supporters, making it clear that they wouldn’t merely be bystanders in the process.

Mr. Appleton commended the Liberian people’s enthusiasm for the first round of elections, highlighting their belief in democracy, good governance, and a brighter future for Liberia. The Grassroots Development Movement, he noted, stands for peace, good governance, human rights, and socio-economic development for the people of Liberia. Mr. Appleton expressed his gratitude to candidates, supporters, the international community, the media, and donor partners for their contributions to the electoral exercise.
