Former Chief Justice Cllr. Gloria Scott and Three Others Sentenced to Life for Charloe Musu’s Murder; Defense Appeals to Supreme Court

Monrovia, Liberia – In a landmark ruling, Criminal Court “A” sentenced former Chief Justice Cllr. Gloria Musu Scott and three accomplices—Gertrude Newton, Alice Johnson, and Rebecca Wisner—to life in prison for their involvement in the murder of Charloe Musu. The sentencing, handed down by Judge Roosevelt Willie, comes after trial jurors found all defendants guilty of the heinous crime on Thursday, December 21, 2023.

The prosecution’s case detailed the events surrounding Charloe Musu’s death, with the rotating officer’s report failing to establish whether the defendants had prior criminal records. During Tuesday’s sentencing, Judge Willie emphasized a crucial witness’s revelation that Cllr. Scott had later confided in Justice Minister Frank Musa Dean about her apprehensions, confirming the grim reality of the incident.

Families and relatives of both the defendants and the victim expressed emotional reactions following the sentencing, attributing the judgment to a comprehensive report from Dr. Benedict Koilee, Liberia’s pathologist. However, in a strategic move, the defense swiftly filed an appeal with the Supreme Court, aiming to scrutinize the documentation and contribute to a more informed and nuanced conclusion.
