Monrovia, Liberia- Finance Minister Samuel Tweh blamed members of the opposition for the recent United States Treasury Department sanctions imposed on him, Senate Pro Tempore Chie, and Senator Emmanuel Nyuquay. He made the disclosure in a press conference held on Thursday, December 14, 2023.
The sanctions, issued on Monday, December 11, alleged their involvement in significant corruption, including bribery to manipulate legislative processes and misuse of public funds.
Minister Tweh, speaking at the EJS Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, asserted that a prolonged campaign of lies, misinformation, propaganda, and disinformation waged by propagandists and malicious detractors had finally succeeded. The sanctions also targeted the immediate family members of the designated officials, including their spouses and minor children.
Expressing disbelief and labeling the verdict as unjust and unfair, Minister Tweh highlighted the fundamental violation of their rights. He criticized the lack of due process and investigation, stating that the public designations occurred without providing the accused individuals an opportunity to dispel rumors or present counterarguments.
Minister Tweh emphasized the unreliable nature of publicly available information used for sanctions, alleging that this disinformation strategy aimed to undermine the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) by well-connected individuals. The Finance Minister urged a fair and transparent process to address the accusations against him and his colleagues.
