Monrovia, Liberia – Emmanuel Gonquoi, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL), is calling on the newly inaugurated Boakai administration to initiate legal proceedings against government officials recently sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department. The list of sanctioned individuals includes prominent figures like CDC Secretary General Jefferson Koijee, Senate Pro Tempore Albert Chie, Senator James Emmanuel Nuquay, and Finance Minister Samuel Tweah, who face allegations of corruption and human rights violations.
Addressing the press in Monrovia on Thursday, Gonquoi emphasized the urgency of confronting deep-rooted corruption within Liberian society. He urged the legal system to hold those found guilty of crimes accountable, signaling a departure from impunity. The U.S. Treasury Department’s sanctions have also targeted Senator-elect National McGill, former Solicitor General Sayma Cyrenus Cyphus, and Senator-elect Bill Tweahway.
Gonquoi stressed the need to establish a precedent through legal action, sending a clear message that individuals implicated in corruption must face tangible consequences. The U.S. government has further approved the candidacies of businessman Benoni Urey, Nimba County Senator Prince Johnson, and retiring Grand Cape Mount County Senator Varney Sherman.
The EFFL leader’s call for legal action adds to the unfolding developments following the U.S. sanctions, marking a crucial moment in Liberia’s fight against corruption and accountability in governance.
