ECC Condemns Attack on Nimba Tallying Center, Accuses CDC of Masterminding, Urges Investigation and Enhanced Security

Monrovia, Liberia – In a shocking turn of events, the Election Coordinating Committee (ECC) has issued a stern condemnation of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), alleging their involvement in the recent attack on the Tallying Station in Nimba and Montserrado. The incident led to a significant disruption in the electoral process.

The ECC, in a statement released over the weekend, pointed out that Garrison Yealu, Chairperson of the Governance Commission, arrived at the magisterial office in Nimba with a convoy of seven vehicles, purportedly filled with CDC supporters who claimed to be there to file a complaint.

However, according to the ECC, the presence of these CDC supporters at the Tallying Center in Nimba escalated tensions, with some individuals attempting to gain access to the Tallying rooms. This hostile action effectively halted the Tallying process for several hours, forcing national and international observers to exit the area.

What raised further concerns was that a similar incident was reported from the Montserrado SKD Tally Center, which the ECC has described as a calculated attempt to undermine the credibility of the election results and compromise the integrity of the ongoing electoral process.

In its statement, the ECC cautioned political actors about the looming threat of U.S. Visa Restrictions for individuals disrupting the election exercise. Simultaneously, the election oversight body called on the Ministry of Justice to launch a full-scale investigation into the matter. The ECC also urged an increase in the presence of the Liberia National Police (LNP) officers at all Tallying Centers to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The situation is evolving, and Liberia’s citizens and the international community are closely watching as the ECC and authorities work to ensure the integrity of the electoral process amidst these troubling developments.
