Monrovia, Liberia – In a united front to maintain peace and uphold the democratic process in Liberia, the United Nations (UN) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Liberia have issued a joint statement, urging politicians and political parties to respect the Farmington River Declaration, especially in light of preliminary election results released by the National Elections Commission (NEC). Both organizations have welcomed the gradual announcement of polling results and positive feedback from observers regarding the conduct of the recent October 10 General and Presidential Elections.
However, the UN and ECOWAS have expressed grave concern over the rising tensions in Liberia following a generally peaceful voting process. They have noted that the proliferation of misinformation and disinformation, as well as allegations and counter-allegations, could undermine the integrity of the electoral process and further heighten tension within the country.
The joint statement emphasizes that the consolidation of peace in Liberia is the collective responsibility of its citizens, both at home and abroad. As a result, the UN and ECOWAS have called upon all Liberians to refrain from actions that could threaten the nation’s hard-won peace.
The UN and ECOWAS have also urged Liberians to stand against violence and to avoid spreading unfounded information that may incite unrest. In a direct appeal to the leaders of political parties, they have called for a commitment to peace in both words and actions, aligning their behavior with the revised Farmington River Declaration. Additionally, the statement has reminded political parties that the joint security force is the only authorized entity to provide security to national installations, including tally centers across the country. The UN and ECOWAS have encouraged all political parties to remain calm and exercise restraint during the vote tallying process conducted by the NEC. They have underscored the importance of the NEC and security agencies professionally carrying out their duties to uphold the rule of law, while urging all parties to address grievances peacefully through appropriate legal means in accordance with the law. The joint statement concludes with a reminder to all political leaders of their responsibility to safeguard Liberia’s peace, which is essential for the country’s stability and democratic consolidation.
As tensions persist, Liberia’s citizens, leaders, and the international community await a peaceful resolution of the electoral process, hoping for a smooth transition of power in the nation.
