National Public Health Institute of Liberia Worries over Mpox Outbreak

Congo Town, Monrovia –The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has issued a warning following a recent outbreak of Monkeypox virus (Mpox) across several countries in Central and West Africa. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared this outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) under the International Health Regulations (2005).

According to a release from NPHIL, As of early August 2024, Liberia has reported 5 confirmed cases of Mpox across three counties. The situation is further compounded by new cases in neighboring countries such as Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

Mpox, a disease caused by a virus related to smallpox, is transmitted through direct skin-to-skin contact, sexual contact with bodily fluids or lesions, and respiratory droplets. Symptoms of the virus include fever, chills, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and muscle aches.

In response to the outbreak, NPHIL is enhancing its surveillance system and collaborating with the Ministry of Health to implement preventive measures and response strategies. the institution has further cautioned the Liberian public to practice preventive measures, including frequent hand-washing, avoiding close contact with individuals showing symptoms of Mpox, and seeking medical attention if symptoms develop.
