Monrovia, Liberia – The United States, represented by Deputy Chief of Mission Catherine Rodriguez, has announced technical assistance to Liberia’s National Traditional Council. The announcement came during the induction ceremony of the newly elected council heads held recently in Congo Town.
Madam Rodriguez detailed that the US government’s support is aimed at aiding the council in fulfilling its mandate while upholding principles of accountability and transparency. She highlighted that this support is part of a broader commitment to enhancing Liberia’s governance framework.
“The induction of the Council of Chiefs represents a key milestone in Liberia’s ongoing journey to strengthen local governance, in line with the Local Government Act of 2018, which integrates traditional leadership into the formal governance structure,” Rodriguez stated.
She urged the Liberian government to fully implement all aspects of the Local Government Act, noting that decentralization would improve transparency, accountability, and bolster democracy across the country.
Rodriguez emphasized the significant role the Council of Chiefs plays in governance, bridging traditional communities with formal government structures, and preserving Liberia’s cultural heritage.
The Deputy Chief of Mission reminded the newly inducted Chiefs of their crucial role in addressing the challenges and opportunities faced by Liberia, underscoring the importance of their leadership and wisdom in shaping the country’s future.
