Liberian National Bar Association and NEC Foster Electoral Dispute Resolution Awareness

Monrovia, Liberia – In a collaborative effort, the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) and the National Elections Commission (NEC) have successfully concluded a comprehensive dialogue and awareness program. This initiative, spearheaded by Cllr. Sylvester D. Rennie, President of the LNBA, aimed to illuminate the legal minds of lawyers across Liberia, engage Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), members of the security sector, the media, and political party representatives on the intricacies of resolving electoral disputes. This crucial event comes in anticipation of the upcoming presidential and legislative elections slated for October 10, 2023.

The primary objective of the dialogue was to bolster the capacity of NEC hearing officers, including those who are not legal practitioners, to expedite electoral dispute resolutions and prevent cases from exceeding statutory timeframes, as previously witnessed. Cllr. Rennie emphasized the importance of equipping lawyers, even those not actively practicing, with foundational knowledge to minimize unnecessary motions that could potentially lead to case delays. This proactive approach underscores the commitment of the LNBA and the NEC to ensure the smooth and timely resolution of election-related conflicts.

Looking forward, the LNBA plans to extend this engagement beyond Monrovia to regions such as Bomi, Cape Mount, and Gbarpolu counties, marking the next phase of this pivotal project. This initiative stands as a testament to the dedication of the LNBA and the NEC to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure a fair and efficient resolution of electoral disputes in Liberia.
