Liberia Civic Society Consortium Condemns UP President-Elect Boakai’s Support Remarks Over Rep. Koon Speakership  Bid

Monrovia, Liberia- The Liberia Civic Society Consortium, a coalition of six Civil Society Organizations operating within the legal framework of Liberia, has expressed dissatisfaction over what they term as “potential implications for democratic values” attributing Liberia’s
President-Elect Joseph N. Boakai.

The Organization in a press release dated January 5, 2024, Asserted that they are concerned about a recent threatening statement from the Unity Party leader relatives to the Speakership bid of Montserrado County District 11 Representative Richard Nagbe Koon.

The Consortium added that there are now serious doubts about the political landscape’s adherence to the values of justice, openness, and equal opportunity in light of the President-Elect’s recent remarks that suggest consequences based on support or lack thereof for Representative Richard Nagbe Koon’s bid for the speakership. According to them, Regardless of party background, the Consortium is committed to creating an atmosphere that supports democratic values and guarantees the well-being of all citizens.

They underlined that the specific statements implying that Richard Kun’s followers will receive special consideration for jobs and when choosing commissioners for their districts are very concerning. The body stressed that Rather than establishing a system that would promote partiality or discrimination based on party affiliations, the Consortium promotes the value of meritocracy and equitable representation in public offices.

Additionally, the Association states that it is hesitant to accept Rep. Richard Nagbe Koon’s implied repercussions, which include the possibility that they won’t be able to see the President for the next six years unless they attend official events at the Capitol.

“Such statements raise questions about the inclusivity and openness of the political leadership, which are crucial for a thriving democratic society” The release noted.

The Liberia Civic Society urges President-elect Boakai to take a second look and provide more context for his remarks in order to maintain a civil, equitable, and democratic political dialogue. The Consortium in conclusion reiterated its dedication to promoting responsible leadership, due process, and the defense of people’ rights in Liberia.
