Monrovia, Liberia – The devastating fire that engulfed the Liberia Capitol Building on December 18, 2024, has been officially classified as arson, both by local authorities and an American team of fire experts.

Prior to the arrival of the U.S.-based Fire Rescue Alliance investigators, the Liberia National Police and Fire Service had already determined that the fire was deliberately set. Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman stated that there was overwhelming evidence to support this conclusion. “We have identified individuals of interest and have contacted them. If they fail to come forward, we will proceed with their arrest,” Coleman said.

On the morning of the fire, Liberians watched in shock as flames consumed parts of the historic Capitol Building, particularly the Joint Chambers and the Dome. The structure, built in 1957, suffered severe damage.

Upon arrival in Liberia, the American fire experts conducted their own independent investigation. Their report, submitted on March 4, 2025, reinforced the initial findings. They concluded that the fire originated near the Speaker’s podium, where a flammable liquid was likely used to accelerate its spread. Investigators also discovered suspicious one-gallon containers near exits, suggesting an effort to obstruct escape routes.

The report ruled out electrical failure as a cause, as no signs of short-circuiting or electrical arcing were found. While no injuries or deaths were recorded, the incident remains under police investigation, with authorities working to identify and apprehend those responsible.

With both local and international experts confirming the arson, law enforcement is expected to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
