Liberia’s Transport Ministry Denies Legitimacy of Motorcyclists’ Union

Monrovia – The Ministry of Transport has dismissed claims by the Supreme Motorcyclists Transport Union of Liberia that it is a registered union under the government.

In a statement released today, the Ministry expressed concern over ongoing protests by the group, clarifying that it has no official status or authority to operate. The government has urged motorcyclists under this banner to refrain from impersonating a registered union to avoid future embarrassment.

The release comes in a wake of a heated protest from nearly thousand of motorcyclists who was seen protesting over a No-Go-Zone decision Placed by the Liberia National Police about three weeks ago. The cyclists peaceful protesters are calling on the government of Liberia to lift the ban initiated against t motorcycles riding across major Streets in Monrovia.

As the dispute continues, it remains to be seen how motorcyclists will respond to the Ministry’s firm stance.
