Joint Civil Society Anti-Corruption Initiative Wants US Government Sanctions Officials and Others Investigated Over Corruption Allegations

Monrovia, Liberia–The Joint Civil Society Anti-Corruption Initiative has petition the Liberia Ati-Corruption Commission calling for a speedy investigation in a corruption allegations level against government officials including US Sanctions individuals.

Reading the Petition on behalf of the group at the LACC office in Congo town on Wednesday December 6, 2023 was Alfreda T Joe who noted that the LACC should request to the United States Government all information related to corruption allegations involving persons sanctioned between December 9, 2020 to August 2022, regarding whom prosecutions are yet to commence Such as Cllr. Varney G. Sherman, Senator of Grand Cape Mount County, Prince Y. Johnson, Senator of Nimba County, Nathaniel McGill, former Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Mr. Bill Twehway, former Managing Director of the National Port Authority and Cllr. Sayma Cyrenius Cephas, former Solicitor General of the Republic of Liberia.
According to JOCSAI, following years of inaction by the Liberian Government, evident by the country’s decline on the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) of Transparency International from the of 29, 2021 to 26, 2022, it is high time that those credibly accused of corruption, including those sanctioned by the United States Government for significant public sector corruption are investigated and prosecuted.

They furthered urged the LACC as a prosecutory body to launch a timely, robust and an impartial investigation into corruption allegations as well as prosecute the concerned officials in line with the Commission’s mandate of investigating and prosecuting all allegations and incidences of corruption in Liberia.

For her part, receiving the Petition on behalf of the Commission was the Chairperson of the LACC Cllr. Alexandra Kromah Zoe when lauded the group for their stance and corporation in fighting corruption.
she maintained that the commission is making significant effects in making sure the corrupt are brought to justice.
