Hundreds of residents from Gilipa, Nyenikpala, and Tinsu in Nimba County are threatening to boycott the upcoming senatorial by-election, citing years of unfulfilled promises by politicians and the national government.
Nimbaians are expected to head to the polls on April 22, 2025, to elect a new senator following the death of Senator Prince Johnson, who passed away on November 28, 2024, in Paynesville City.
Speaking at a news conference over the weekend, the spokesperson of the three towns, Mr. N. Aaron Payetee, said their decision stems from years of neglect and unmet demands for essential services and infrastructure—promises that have remained empty since the towns were established.
Mr. Payetee stressed that despite their unwavering support for various political parties in past elections, the government has consistently failed to fulfill its commitments to their communities.
“Our people have endured years of suffering with no tangible results. The promises made during elections are never fulfilled, leaving us with poor roads, no proper healthcare facilities, and limited access to quality education,” he lamented.
He further noted that the time has come for their voices to be heard, declaring that they will not support any elections until their concerns are addressed.
The residents are demanding urgent attention to healthcare and education—two of the most pressing challenges facing their communities.
“Our patience has run out. We deserve better, and until our needs are met, we will not participate in the by-election,” Payetee concluded.
