Embattled Speaker, Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa, remains optimistic about reclaiming his position as Speaker of Liberia’s 55th National Legislature, as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) prepares to send its mediation team back to Liberia to intensify efforts in resolving the ongoing leadership crisis within the House of Representatives.
A high-level ECOWAS delegation, led by the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Right Honourable Hadja Memounatou Ibrahima, is expected in the country soon to engage both factions in a bid to break the deadlock.
However, as the delegation prepares to arrive, political pundits have raised concerns over the absence of Majority Bloc Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, who is currently out of the country. His absence adds uncertainty to the mediation efforts.
The unanswered question remains whether the House of Representatives, under Speaker Koon’s leadership, will accept any proposal from the regional body, especially after the initial round of negotiations ended in a stalemate.
