ECOWAS and United Nations Strongly Condemn Lofa County Violence, Urge Peace

Monrovia, Liberia – The recent outbreak of election-related violence in Foya, Lofa County, on Friday, September 29, 2023, has sparked international outrage, with both ECOWAS and the United Nations joining the chorus of condemnation. In a unified press release, these prominent partners dedicated to strengthening Liberia’s democracy expressed deep concern over the violence that unfolded in the northern region of Liberia, involving the two major political parties contesting the upcoming presidential and legislative elections. Acts allegedly perpetrated by supporters of the Ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the former Ruling Unity Party (UP) have been met with resounding condemnation, accompanied by fervent calls for peace and calm in the midst of this tense situation.

ECOWAS and the United Nations went beyond condemnation to extend their heartfelt condolences to the grieving families affected by this tragic incident. Simultaneously, they issued a strong appeal to the leadership of both the UP and CDC, urging them to use their influence to dissuade their supporters from engaging in provocation and any form of violence. The international bodies emphasized the significance of respecting the Farmington River Declaration 2023, upholding human rights, and maintaining the rule of law. Furthermore, ECOWAS and the UN stressed the imperative of full cooperation between the political parties involved and the Liberia National Police (LNP) during the ongoing investigations.

In a commendable gesture, ECOWAS and the United Nations recognized the prompt action taken by the Liberia National Police (LNP) in swiftly restoring peace after the eruption of violence. However, they further called on the LNP to conduct thorough, impartial investigations and to make their findings public to ensure that those responsible for the violence are brought to justice. Simultaneously, the international organizations cautioned the media to exercise responsibility in their reporting to prevent exacerbating the volatile situation. In conclusion, ECOWAS and the United Nations issued a compelling call to all state actors, as well as the public, to embrace the values of peace, accountability, and respect for the rule of law, with the ultimate goal of consolidating peace and security in Liberia during this critical period leading up to the elections.
