CDC and ALCOP Conclude Election Campaign with Violent Clash Along the Japan Freeway

Monrovia, Liberia-The conclusion of the October 10, 2023, Presidential and Legislative Elections campaign in Liberia took a tumultuous turn as the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the All Liberia Coalition Party (ALCOP) engaged in a violent clash along the Japan Freeway. The Sunday evening confrontation between supporters of these two political parties resulted in a chaotic scene, with two individuals feared dead and several others sustaining injuries.

As campaign activities reached their climax, supporters of the CDC and ALCOP crossed paths at the Bardnersville Junction along the Japan Freeway, which quickly escalated into violent exchanges. Reports suggest that the conflict was ignited by provocation from supporters of the CDC, leading to stones throwing. Before the Liberia National Police (LNP) could intervene, one individual was found unconscious, having been struck by stones.

Upon the arrival of LNP officers, tear gas was deployed to disperse the rival supporters, gradually bringing the tension under control. The violent incident serves as a stark reminder of the heightened emotions and tensions surrounding the impending elections. As Liberia approaches this crucial electoral moment, concerns about political violence and its implications for a peaceful democratic process remain a critical issue.
