Monrovia, Liberia – The Press Union of Liberia has issued a strong condemnation of the recent assault on journalist Joseph Tumbey by a Sierra Leonean soldier in Monrovia, labelling the incident a grave violation of human rights.
A video circulating widely on social media depicts the distressing attack on journalist Joseph Tumbey, who suffered physical assault and had his phone damaged by a Sierra Leonean soldier at the premises of the Liberia National Police headquarters.
In response to this disturbing incident, the Press Union has called for an immediate transparent public inquiry to be conducted by the Liberia National Police. The aim of this inquiry is to uncover the truth surrounding the assault and to ensure accountability for those responsible.
Furthermore, the Union has demanded swift action to ensure the safety and security of journalist Joseph Tumbey and other media personnel covering the ongoing arrest proceedings of the former Sierra Leone Police chief, who is facing allegations of conspiracy within Sierra Leone’s borders.
Expressing deep concern, the Press Union has cautioned against any attempts at coercion, threats, or harassment directed towards journalists in Liberia, particularly when perpetrated by foreign security agents. This concern takes on added significance against the backdrop of the upcoming national elections.
In a show of solidarity, the Press Union of Liberia has engaged with its counterpart, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SAJ), and has reached out to the Sierra Leone Armed Forces.
The goal of these engagements is to address the undemocratic behavior displayed by service personnel from Sierra Leone in Monrovia.
The Press Union remains firmly committed to safeguarding the rights of journalists and upholding the principles of press freedom. The organization pledges to closely monitor the evolving situation and to advocate for justice and respect for media professionals.
