Liberia: Dozens Render Homeless After Intense Rainfall Across Montserrado

Several persons in Monrovia and its environs have been left homeless following a heavy downpour of rain over the weekend. The intense rainfall, which lasted for many hours, caused flooding in various areas including Soul Clinic, Zubah Town, GSA Road, AB Tolbert Road, Johnsonville, Cheesmanburg, and Doe Community.

The flooding in these areas has resulted in many homes being submerged, leaving residents displaced and in need of assistance. Those affected by the floods have been forced to seek shelter in temporary accommodations such as schools, churches, and community centers.

Efforts are also being made to assess the extent of the damage and provide support to those who have lost their homes.

The heavy rains have also caused widespread destruction of property, with roads washed away, bridges collapsed, and electricity poles uprooted. This has further exacerbated the situation for residents in the affected areas, making it difficult for aid to reach those in need.

Speaking to reporters, some of the affected residents expressed their disbelief and sadness at the extent of the damage caused by the flooding. Many of them are now left without a place to call home and are unsure of where they will go next.

“Right now water in my house, all my things are floating, so I want president Boakai to come and help, that why we voted him” Lovetee Johnson Piah, a resident of the master plumber community, Paynesville noted.

Local authorities have urged residents to take precautions and seek higher ground in the event of more heavy rainfall. They have also called on the government and international organizations to provide assistance to those affected by the flooding and help rebuild their homes and communities.

In response to the crisis, various humanitarian organizations have started mobilizing resources to provide emergency relief to those affected. The Liberian Red Cross Society, the United Nations Development Program, and other local NGOs are working tirelessly to provide aid to the displaced families and individuals.

As the cleanup and recovery efforts continue, there is a strong sense of unity and solidarity among the affected communities. Residents are coming together to support one another and rebuild their lives in the wake of this disaster.

The flooding in Monrovia and its environs serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of low-lying areas to the effects of climate change. As extreme weather events become more frequent, it is crucial for governments and communities to work together to build resilience and protect the most vulnerable.
