Cllr. Taiwan Saye Gongloe Strongly Condemns Campaign violence and stresses its Detrimental Effect on the Farmington Declaration

Monrovia, Liberia – In a forceful denunciation of the recent outbreak of campaign-related violence on August 10, 2023, Cllr. Taiwan Saye Gongloe, the presidential candidate of the Liberian People’s Party (LPP), has expressed deep concern over the clashes involving supporters of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and the major opposition Unity Party (UP). Gongloe strongly condemned the violence, emphasizing its adverse impact on the Farmington Declaration.

Gongloe emphasized the carelessness and disregard for peace that both the CDC and UP displayed during the unfortunate incident when speaking to reporters at a press conference. He expressed his firm stance against such violent actions and denounced any attempts by leaders to incite their supporters towards aggressive behavior. “The events of yesterday are a stain on our pursuit of peace and harmony. Those who engaged in violence displayed insensitivity towards the collective sentiment of the Liberian people,” Gongloe firmly stated.

Gongloe, a former head of the Liberia National Bar Association and now a prominent political leader of the LPP, emphasized the critical importance of not undermining the progress made since the civil crisis, which cost countless lives. He urged all political parties and supporters to refrain from resorting to violence as a means of political expression. “I personally visited the offices of various political parties to set an example that we can engage in political activities without resorting to violence. Politics should never be synonymous with violence,” Gongloe emphasized.

In a resolute tone, Gongloe directed his appeal towards President George Weah of the ruling CDC and Ambassador Joseph Boakai, urging them to demonstrate maturity in their roles, especially during the ongoing campaign activities. He underscored the accountability of both leaders for any form of violence that may arise as a result of their actions or statements.

Furthermore, Gongloe called on leaders of all political parties to unite in condemning the campaign-related violence, expressing the urgency of restoring civility and stability to the political landscape. The clashes on August 10 resulted in numerous injuries among supporters and partisans of both the CDC and UP, leaving an indelible mark on the electoral process.

As Liberia inches closer to the 2023 elections, Gongloe’s call for unity, peaceful discourse, and a collective commitment to non-violence resonates strongly. The Farmington Declaration, which symbolizes the nation’s pledge to democracy, progress, and peace, should serve as a guiding principle for all parties involved.
