Monrovia — Councillor J. Fonati Koffa, head of the committee overseeing the construction of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC)’s new modern headquarters, has dismissed rumors of an impending lawsuit threatening to derail the party’s highly anticipated groundbreaking ceremony set for October 18 along Tubman Boulevard, Congo Town.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Spoon TV, Cllr. Koffa described reports of criminal trespassing and land dispute as a “failed attempt” by detractors to disrupt the CDC’s landmark project.
“We met with the gentleman this morning. He realized he was pursuing the wrong path. The case was withdrawn, and we’re back on course,” Koffa confirmed.
Groundbreaking to Go Ahead as Planned
The CDC is expected to turn out thousands of partisans for what it calls “Blue Day” — a grand show of unity and resilience. Koffa said mobilization had barely begun, yet enthusiasm among supporters and sympathizers was already overwhelming.
“The momentum is massive,” he said. “We haven’t even started full mobilization, but partisans, sympathizers, independents, and even ruling party members have reached out to support the project.”
He revealed that nearly 18% of the project’s contributors are members of the ruling Unity Party, including “a couple of deputy ministers and one minister,” adding that their involvement was out of goodwill rather than divided loyalty.
Land Dispute: ‘No $5,000 Payment, No $300,000 Deal’
Addressing Addressing allegations that the CDC had underpaid for the land, Koffa clarified that no money had exchanged hands** and that the disputed lot was not part of the main project site.
“Our main property is already purchased and titled in the name of the CDC,” he emphasized. “We only entered negotiations to acquire adjoining lots to expand the complex. But there was no $5,000 payment, and certainly no $300,000 deal.”
According to him, the party is in “friendly negotiations” with neighboring property owners, who have consented to let the CDC use their spaces temporarily for parking, cooking, and logistical purposes during the ceremony.
Desperate Attempts to Disrupt
Koffa accused political opponents of orchestrating false claims and distractions to derail the CDC’s event.
“Some nefarious individuals tried to influence the property owner to disrupt the groundbreaking. When the bridge story failed, they turned to land claims. But these are desperate attempts — and they have failed,” he said.
The Grand Kru lawmaker added that the CDC has formally notified the Ministry of Justice about the event, and discussions are ongoing to ensure peaceful traffic and crowd management.
“We’re a law-abiding party,” Koffa maintained. “We’ve written to the Minister of Justice, and he has agreed to meet with us to go over the modalities for a peaceful program.”
On social media claims that the property belongs to a Liberian in the United States and carries unpaid taxes, Koffa waved off the assertions as “propaganda.”
“The taxes are fully paid. The records are there. Property issues in Liberia are complicated, but this one is clear — the CDC owns its land,” he said confidently.
The CDC, he said, will acquire all adjoining properties strictly through purchase agreements, not leases or secret arrangements.
“We are a political party, not a secret organization. Everything will be in the name of the CDC,” Koffa asserted.
The CDC Still Strikes Fear
When asked why, according to him, the ruling establishment appears uneasy about the CDC’s momentum, Koffa said:
“Every time they hear CDC, they go berserk. The arrival of President Weah alone sends them into confusion. The turnout on Saturday will speak for itself.”
He concluded by calling on CDC supporters to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the October 18 groundbreaking.
“Our citizens will come out in their numbers — peacefully and proudly. Nothing will stop the CDC from breaking ground for its modern headquarters,” he said.
Authorities in the party says the planned CDC headquarters will stand as the party’s first-ever modern complex, symbolizing a new era of organizational strength after the demolition of its former Bernard’s Farm compound. The upcoming ceremony has been tagged “historic moment of renewal and unity” for the George Weah-founded political movement.
