Monrovia, Liberia – In a tragic incident that unfolded in the early hours of Monday, September 4, 2023, seven-year-old Alex Wion lost his life in a flood disaster that left more than 100 residents of Crab Hole Community in Montserrado County Electoral District #16 homeless. The catastrophe was triggered by heavy rainfall, causing the entire community to be overwhelmed by rising floodwaters.
The father of the deceased, William Wion, recounted the harrowing experience, revealing that as their home was inundated by the floodwaters, young Alex had attempted to open their back door. Overwhelmed by grief and despair, Mr. Wion has called upon the Liberian government and international humanitarian organizations for assistance during this trying time.
This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for disaster preparedness and mitigation measures in vulnerable communities, as well as the importance of timely assistance from authorities and humanitarian agencies in the face of such calamities.
