Greenville, Sinoe Co – local leaders and organizations in Greenville have taken a decisive strike to confront the escalating issue of drug abuse in the county.
Hosted by the Sinoe County Rural Women Association, the gathering included representatives from the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), health officials, and community members, aiming to formulate effective responses to this pressing challenge and address recent allegations of misconduct among law enforcement.
Alfred A. Sombai, Special Agent with the LDEA, emphasized the need for enhanced community engagement in the fight against drug-related offenses. He advocated for improved enforcement at checkpoints and a more proactive stance from the agency. Sombai also pointed out the critical necessity for recreational facilities to support the rehabilitation of youth impacted by substance abuse, while expressing concern over the agency’s mobility issues that hinder operational effectiveness.
Participants raised significant concerns, with Levi Teah, a youth leader from Seebeh Community, alleging that some LDEA officers had informed drug dealers about impending raids. In response, County Attorney Anthony Daniel T. K. Dweh acknowledged the overcrowding at Greenville Central Prison, where over 80 inmates are confined in a facility meant for just 25. He urged the government to provide additional resources for the LDEA and highlighted the importance of rehabilitation programs to aid recovery.
Sinoe County Superintendent Hon. Peter Wleh Nyenswah encouraged the Rural Women Association to involve more women in drug prevention initiatives. He announced plans to set up a rehabilitation center in the county and called for thorough investigations into drug-related incidents.
The meeting underscored the urgent need to address drug abuse in Sinoe County, with all parties committed to a collaborative approach in tackling the issue moving forward.
