Monrovia, Liberia – President George Weah of Liberia has embarked on a significant diplomatic mission to the United States, where he will participate in the 78th edition of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York City. President Weah’s departure from Liberia took place on Thursday, September 14, 2023, as he departed through the Roberts International Airport in lower Margibi County. Alongside other world leaders and heads of state, President Weah is expected to participate in the opening of the general session on September 18, 2023, at the UNGA hall. He is also slated to address world leaders on September 20, 2023, where key issues such as Liberia’s sustained peace, national transformation, economic growth, and the upcoming October 10, 2023, general elections will be highlighted.
Among the pivotal topics President Weah is expected to discuss at the UNGA are the remarkable peace Liberia has enjoyed for two decades, the visible transformations occurring within the country, and its economic progress. Additionally, the president will engage in sideline discussions with international partners to further the interests of the Liberian people. The UNGA session will also provide a platform for world leaders to review the progress made in implementing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and provide political guidance for the years leading up to the target date in 2030.
Accompanying President Weah on this diplomatic mission are key government officials, including Foreign Minister Dee-Maxwell Kemayah, Defense Minister Daniel Ziahkahn, and Information Minister Ledgerhood Rennie. In the president’s absence, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Wesseh Blamo, will chair the cabinet in close consultation with the Vice President, maintaining a strong connection with President Weah via telephone. President Weah is expected to return to Liberia next week, having represented his country’s interests on the global stage at the UNGA.
