Vivian Wilson, the 20-year-old daughter of billionaire Elon Musk, has revealed plans to leave the United States, citing the political climate under Donald Trump’s return to office as her main reason for wanting to leave. Wilson, who publicly severed ties with her father in 2022, took to Threads to share her thoughts on the matter, stating she no longer sees a future in the US under the influence of Trump’s policies.
“I’ve thought about leaving for a while, but yesterday solidified it for me,” Wilson wrote. “Even if Trump’s presidency is only four years, the political landscape and the people who support him aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.”
Wilson, formerly known as Xavier Musk, filed for a legal name and gender change in 2022, opting to adopt her mother’s maiden name, Wilson, and publicly distancing herself from her father. In her court filings, she expressed a desire to sever all ties with Elon Musk, saying, “I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape, or form.”
The strained relationship between father and daughter has been well-documented. Musk, who has publicly supported Trump and is known for his controversial views, has often criticized Vivian, calling her a “communist” and accusing her of being misled into transitioning. Musk has also expressed his strong opposition to gender-affirming treatments like puberty blockers, which he called “sterilization drugs” and “incredibly evil.”
Vivian, however, refutes her father’s claims, pointing out his lack of involvement in her upbringing. She accused Musk of never understanding her struggles, particularly the harassment she endured for her femininity and queerness. “He doesn’t know what I was like as a child because he simply wasn’t there,” she said. “I’ve been reduced to a stereotype by him, which speaks volumes about how he views queer people.”
As Vivian prepares to leave the country, it’s clear that the political and personal tensions between father and daughter are unlikely to ease anytime soon. With her decision to leave, Vivian is taking a stand not only against the political climate she rejects but also against the painful family dynamics that have played out in the public eye.
