Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai unveiled a major new initiative on Wednesday aimed at transforming access to higher education for Liberian students. In partnership with Nekotech, the President announced the launch of a one-billion-dollar no-collateral student loan program, which will provide financial support to over 250 students seeking to study abroad in fields like Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Business, and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The new loan scheme, unveiled at a ceremony at the Executive Mansion, marks a significant milestone for the Government of Liberia’s educational policy. The program is designed to eliminate the need for collateral, which often presents a major barrier for students aspiring to pursue higher education in top-tier institutions in the United States and Canada. By removing this financial obstacle, the initiative will open up opportunities for talented students who otherwise might not have the means to further their studies.
“This is a transformative moment for Liberia,” President Boakai said in his address at the launch. “Through this partnership, Nekotech is not just investing in the future of our youth, but in the future of Liberia itself. This initiative will allow our students to acquire the skills, knowledge, and leadership necessary to drive our country’s development and prosperity.”
The loan program aligns with the Government’s broader ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, which focuses on building human capacity and fostering a skilled workforce to meet the country’s evolving needs. By targeting key sectors such as STEM, business, and AI, the program aims to produce graduates who can contribute to Liberia’s technological and economic growth.
The initiative is particularly significant because it removes the traditional requirement for collateral that many students struggle to provide. Under the new scheme, students will have the opportunity to pursue advanced education without the financial burdens typically associated with international student loans.
During the ceremony, President Boakai thanked Nekotech and its partners for their role in this groundbreaking project. He also expressed his hope that students benefiting from the program would return to Liberia equipped with the expertise to make a lasting impact on the country’s development.
“Students, I urge you to take full advantage of this opportunity,” he said. “Work hard, study diligently, and bring back the knowledge and skills that will help us build a stronger, more prosperous Liberia.”
The event, attended by government officials, student leaders, and representatives from various youth organizations, was a demonstration of Liberia’s commitment to providing educational opportunities that will help young people succeed on the global stage while also addressing the country’s domestic development needs.
