Russian President Vladimir Putin extended his congratulations to Donald Trump following the latter’s recent victory in the US presidential election, praising the former president’s courage and offering to engage in dialogue with him.
“I take this opportunity to congratulate him,” Putin said during a speech at the Valdai forum in Sochi on Thursday. When asked whether he was open to discussions with Trump, the Russian leader replied succinctly, “Ready.”
While Putin had previously indicated a preference for Joe Biden—or even Kamala Harris—in the White House, citing a potential advantage for Russia under their leadership, the Kremlin has long recognized Trump’s unique influence on global politics. Moscow has been notably receptive to Trump’s anti-establishment rhetoric and his unconventional approach to governance, which it views as a disruptor to traditional global structures.
Putin’s comments also reflected admiration for Trump’s personal qualities, particularly following an assassination attempt on the former president during a rally earlier this year. “He turned out to be a courageous person,” Putin remarked. “People show who they are in extraordinary circumstances. This is where a person reveals himself. And he showed himself, in my opinion, in a very correct manner, courageously. Like a man.”
Despite past accusations of Russian interference in the 2016 US election to support Trump’s campaign, the Kremlin has consistently denied any involvement. Still, Putin’s remarks signal that Moscow is more than willing to engage with the newly elected US leader, potentially ushering in another chapter of complex relations between the two nations.
