Cummings Weight in on House Speakership Crisis

Monrovia, Liberia — As a concern keep growing over power struggle at Capitol Building, the political leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Mr. Alexander B. Cummings, has called for immediate action to resolve the ongoing impasse in the Liberian House of Representatives, warning that the country is teetering on the brink of a political and constitutional crisis.

For over a month, Liberia’s legislature has been mired in a bitter power struggle, with some lawmakers pushing for the removal of the Speaker, while others rally behind the Speaker’s rights to due process. Despite advice from the Liberian Supreme Court urging an amicable resolution, both sides remain entrenched in their positions, paralyzing the House’s ability to function effectively.

“This crisis is not just a legislative issue, it is a national issue,” Cummings stated. “If left unresolved, it will have serious consequences for our democracy, our economy, and our international standing. We cannot afford to let this stalemate undermine the progress we’ve worked so hard to achieve.”

Cummings emphasized that the deadlock threatens not only the functioning of the House but also the stability of Liberia’s political system. “Without respect for the Constitution and rule of law, the nation cannot claim to have stability,” he warned. “Politics without the guidance of the law will only invite chaos and undermine development.”

The ANC leader also stressed the importance of upholding the Constitution and the rule of law, calling for all parties involved to prioritize the country’s interests over personal or political agendas. He urged the Executive and Judiciary branches of government to step in and help mediate the conflict, reminding them of their responsibility to ensure the separation of powers and avoid further complicating the crisis.

“The actions or inactions of any branch of government have serious implications for the country’s reputation on the global stage,” Cummings said. “A swift and responsible resolution will demonstrate to the world that Liberia is capable of resolving its own governance challenges without external intervention.”

Cummings concluded his statement by urging all parties to engage in honest dialogue within the framework of the law. “We must give our citizens hope that change and progress are possible. The Liberian people deserve better than this gridlock. The time to act is now,” he said.

As the political crisis drags on, the eyes of the nation—and the world—are fixed on Liberia’s leaders to determine whether they can overcome this constitutional challenge and restore stability to the country.
