Temple of Justice, Monrovia – An official of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change was removed from court and handed a 30-day jail term for contempt on Friday, after the presiding judge ruled his behavior disrupted proceedings in the ongoing economic sabotage trial of former Finance Minister Samuel D. Tweah and co-defendants.
Garyeazohn Aba Davies was ejected from the courtroom during final arguments as the high-profile case approached a ruling. The judge found that Davies’ actions compromised the decorum and authority of the judiciary and imposed an immediate custodial sentence.
Under Liberian law, contempt of court can result in a fine or imprisonment.
According to accounts from the scene, the incident began when Alvin Wesseh made a statement and was asked to leave by the court sheriff. In the ensuing exchange, Davies, identified as a CDC supporter, also made a statement. When court officers directed him to exit, he refused. Police then entered the courtroom and removed him.
Following the refusal, the court sentenced Davies to 30 days’ imprisonment.
The economic sabotage case involving former Minister Tweah and several co-defendants remains pending, with a ruling expected after the conclusion of final arguments.
