Breaking News: Chief Justice to Miss SONA Amid Controversy

By: Alphanso G. Kalama;

Monrovia, Liberia – The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia will not be attending the State of the Nation Address (SONA) scheduled for today 4:00pm. Reports initially suggested her absence was tied to a boycott aimed at delegitimizing the controversial speakership of Richard Koon. However, official clarification has since emerged.

Sources close to the judiciary first speculated that the Chief Justice deliberately left the country to avoid lending credibility to what they referred to as the “illegal Speakership” of Koon. These claims quickly gained traction, adding to the already charged political atmosphere.

Official Statement from the Judiciary

Darryl Ambrose Nmah Sr., Media Director of the Judicial Branch, has dismissed the allegations as baseless and unprofessional. In a statement, Nmah clarified that the Chief Justice is currently attending the Annual High-Level Meeting of Chief Justices and Presidents of Supreme and Constitutional Courts of Africa and the Middle East in Cairo, Egypt.

“This meeting is a routine annual event that takes place at this time every year. Linking her absence to a boycott of the SONA is both disingenuous and misleading,” Nmah stated.

Nmah also addressed accusations of poor communication, explaining that journalist Charles Yates contacted him but was informed that he could not speak due to being in a conference. “I confirmed to him via text that the Chief Justice was out of the country and that I was with her,” Nmah added.

Background on the Controversy

The debate over the legality of Richard Koon’s Speakership has sparked divisions within the Liberian political landscape. Critics have accused Koon of assuming the position under questionable circumstances, leading to calls for a boycott from various political actors and institutions.

While the absence of the Chief Justice from SONA may appear coincidental, the timing has intensified scrutiny. However, the judiciary has reiterated that her absence is purely logistical and unrelated to domestic politics.

As the State of the Nation Address unfolds, all eyes will remain on the key players navigating this politically sensitive period in Liberia.
