The Women’s Well-Being Initiative Liberia, in collaboration with the Paynesville City Corporation, hosted the 2nd National Women’s Health Conference for 2025, emphasizing the need for greater support of women’s health programs across the country.

The one-day event, held at the Paynesville Town Hall, took place under the theme: “Empowering Women’s Health: Breaking Barriers and Driving Change.” It brought together young health practitioners, high school and university students, local NGOs, and concluded with a panel discussion on topics including the intersection of sexual and reproductive health, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, and gender-based violence.

Adama Sheriff Pawuja, Chief Founder and Executive Director of the Women’s Well-Being Initiative Liberia, gave an overview of the program, highlighting both achievements and challenges. She issued a strong call for financial and logistical support to help the organization reach its goals.

Despite notable progress, Madam Pawuja emphasized the ongoing lack of resources for community outreach and the limited access to menstrual health products and education for school-going girls. She underscored the need for comprehensive menstrual health education and advocacy training.

She called on donors, NGOs, the government, and individuals to support efforts aimed at expanding outreach, especially in rural Liberia, and to promote educational programs that reduce the high risks of maternal mortality. She also encouraged unity, resilience, and solidarity among young women to preserve their dignity and promote wellness in their communities.

“Today, we are building a Liberia where no woman is left behind, where every woman’s health is valued, and where every girl can grow to reach her full potential without barriers,” she stated.

Madam Abigail F. Cokor, Head of Program at Volunteers for Sustainable Development in Africa (VOSIEDA), served as the keynote speaker. She urged policymakers, including the Ministry of Health, to review national laws to ensure gender sensitivity and prioritize women’s well-being.

She also encouraged healthcare providers to treat women’s health as a national priority, regardless of social status. “Too often, women’s health is overlooked by nurses and other healthcare professionals. This needs to change,” she said, adding that women must also take the lead in advocating for their own health and rights.

“When women are happy, the world remains happy,” she concluded.
