WAEC Liberia Apologizes for Fraudulent 2023 WASSCE Results

Monrovia, Liberia- In an unexpected turn of events, the West African Examinations Council – WAEC Liberia has issued a formal apology to educational stakeholders, candidates, and the public regarding the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results. This apology, conveyed through a press release on August 24, 2023, follows a flurry of social media criticism concerning the classification of candidates as “DIVISION ONE” achievers. WAEC Liberia has clarified that this categorization was a result of a system error stemming from minor technical oversights.

The press release affirms that corrective actions have been diligently undertaken, and the system has been rectified, enabling candidates to revisit their results with confidence. Notably, WAEC Liberia emphasized that the Division I, II, and III distinctions, which garnered much attention in recent days, do not exist in its examination grading system since the inception of WASSCE in 2018.

In the aftermath of this year’s WASSCE results, the online components of the examination faced intense scrutiny due to candidates seemingly achieving Division One status despite struggling in a majority of subjects. This unusual occurrence has sparked speculation among some Liberians, who have questioned whether political motives might underlie these results.
