Monrovia, Liberia — The University of Liberia (UL) has announced a delay in the resumption of classes, originally set for November 18, 2024, due to ongoing renovations aimed at improving campus facilities. At the same time, Acting President Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh condemned the recent surge in student violence, which has disrupted the campus and raised serious concerns.

In a message to the student body, Dr. Conteh explained that the renovations, which include upgrades to classrooms, bathrooms, the library, and improved internet connectivity, were crucial to enhancing the university’s academic environment. The Faculty Senate will determine a new start date for the semester after their meeting next week, allowing the necessary improvements to be completed.

Dr. Conteh also addressed the escalating violence on campus, particularly the violent clashes between student groups PROSA and SUP on November 13, which left several students injured and caused significant property damage. He strongly condemned the actions, stating that such behavior was unacceptable and harmful to the university’s reputation. An investigation into the incidents is underway, and the university will take appropriate actions based on the findings, he added.

“We are committed to providing a safe and conducive environment for academic growth,” Dr. Conteh stated, urging students to engage in peaceful dialogue and to uphold the values of the university.
