‎UMU Plunged Into Mourning as President Rev. Dr. Emmanuel F. Bailey Dies Suddenly

‎The United Methodist University (UMU) is reeling from shock following the sudden death of its president, Rev. Dr. Emmanuel F. Bailey, who reportedly collapsed in his office and was rushed to the AMI Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

‎The tragedy comes just four days after Dr. Bailey attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the UMU Alumni Association’s 16-classroom construction project—a moment that highlighted his ongoing commitment to expanding educational infrastructure at the institution.

‎In an internal notice seen by Administration, the university announced: “We regret to inform you of the unexpected demise of the President of our esteemed institution, United Methodist University, Rev. Dr. Emmanuel F. Bailey… May God forgive his deficiencies and bestow upon him heaven.”

‎Academic Activities Suspended

‎Following his passing, UMU’s Vice President for Administration, Mr. James A. Kromah, ordered an immediate suspension of academic activities. Midterm examinations scheduled for Thursday and Friday have been moved to Tuesday and Thursday, December 2nd and 3rd, 2025. Exams slated for Monday, December 1 remain unchanged.

‎Mr. Kromah said the adjustments were necessary “due to the sudden passing of President Bailey,” noting that the campus community needed time to process the loss of a leader who had become a central figure in the institution’s academic and spiritual life.

‎A Scholar, Pastor, and Builder of Institutions

‎Dr. Bailey’s death marks the end of a distinguished career spanning more than four decades in ministry, counseling, scholarship, and academic administration. With a Doctor of Ministry and a Ph.D. in Pastoral Psychology, he served multiple terms as UMU President, providing steady leadership through periods of expansion and reform.

‎Before returning to Liberia, he spent over 25 years in the United States, serving churches and educational institutions in Ohio and Michigan. His ability to blend pastoral sensitivity with administrative discipline earned him admiration both at home and abroad.

‎A prolific writer, Dr. Bailey authored several works, including I Want to Help but How, Caring for Those Who Grieve, When You Pray Sa.., and The History of Methodism in Liberia. His publications remain widely used in religious and academic circles.

‎A Legacy That Will Outlive Him

‎Colleagues describe him as calm, intellectually grounded, and deeply committed to strengthening religious education in Liberia. His leadership saw UMU grow in visibility and relevance, particularly among students pursuing theology, counseling, and community development studies.

‎As the campus enters a period of mourning, one staff member summed up the collective sentiment: “Rev. Dr. Bailey was a champion of education. His passing is a profound loss—not just to UMU, but to the nation.”
