Supreme Court Justice Intervenes in Capitol Arson Case Amid Rising Tensions Between Government and Suspect’s Lawyers

Monrovia, Liberia – Associate Justice Yamie Qui-qui Gbeisay of the Supreme Court has summoned prosecutors and defense lawyers to a conference today, January 20, 2025, in a high-stakes legal battle surrounding the Capitol Building arson case. The move follows a petition filed by government lawyers seeking a writ of prohibition against a controversial lower court ruling that granted limited freedom to the primary suspect, Thomas Etheridge.

Etheridge, a staff member of embattled House Speaker Fonati Koffa, was arrested on January 10, 2025, in connection with the December 18 fire that destroyed the historic William R. Tolbert Joint Chamber. The incident, widely regarded as a brazen arson attack, has fueled national outrage and calls for accountability.

At the heart of the legal standoff is a decision by Criminal Court “B” Judge Koiboi Nuta, who ruled in favor of Etheridge’s Habeas Corpus petition, allowing the suspect to seek medical treatment under the care of his relatives. Prosecutors, led by Montserrado County’s lead attorney, Cllr. Richard Scott, strongly objected to the ruling, citing concerns that Etheridge’s release—even under limited conditions—could jeopardize the ongoing investigation.

In their petition to the Supreme Court, prosecutors argued that Judge Nuta’s decision undermines the integrity of the justice system and poses a risk of flight or interference in the case. They further claimed that Etheridge’s release violates standard procedures for handling suspects in high-profile criminal cases.

Justice Gbeisay’s citation to the conference aims to address the growing mistrust and tension between the prosecution and defense teams. His directive reads:

“By directive of His Honor Yamie Qui-qui Gbeisay, Sr., Associate Justice presiding in Chambers, you are hereby cited to a conference with His Honor on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the hour of 10:00 am, in connection with the above-captioned case.”

This conference will provide both sides an opportunity to present their arguments before the Justice decides whether to uphold or overturn Judge Nuta’s ruling.

The case has drawn significant public attention, not only because of the suspect’s ties to House Speaker Koffa but also due to the symbolic significance of the Capitol Building. The fire, which many see as an attack on the nation’s democratic institutions, has heightened political tensions and raised questions about security and accountability within the government.

While Etheridge maintains his innocence, critics have called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice is served. The Ministry of Justice has also come under scrutiny, with some questioning its handling of the case and its ability to deliver a fair and impartial trial.

As the legal wrangling continues, today’s conference represents a pivotal moment in a case that could have far-reaching implications for Liberia’s justice system and public trust in the rule of law.
