Monrovia, Liberia – Despite the political atmosphere at the Capitol Building, arising from the arson attack on the historic William R. Tolbert Joint Chamber, the 55th Liberian Legislature has announced that this year’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) will take place on the grounds of the Capitol Building. This decision marks a significant shift as the nation pivots to ensure continuity amid security and logistical challenges.

The December 18 attack, which authorities have labeled an “arson incident,” left the traditional venue for the President’s annual message severely damaged. The SONA, scheduled for Monday, January 27, 2025, is a constitutional mandate under Article 58 of the 1986 Liberian Constitution. It requires the President to outline the legislative agenda and provide a comprehensive report on the state of the Republic.

In a joint press release issued on January 17, the Legislature emphasized heightened security measures surrounding the event. Access to the Capitol Building will be strictly regulated by state security personnel. Individuals without official invitations or access passes, including legislative staffers, have been advised to stay away from the premises on the day of the address.

“This year’s event underscores our resilience as a nation,” the release stated. “We are committed to ensuring that H.E. President Joseph N. Boakai Sr. delivers his 2nd Annual Message in a safe and orderly environment.”

To ensure widespread access, the President’s address will be broadcast live on various media platforms, including radio, television, and social media. However, only accredited media institutions with prior approval will be allowed on-site to cover the event.

The Legislature’s decision to move forward with the address at the Capitol grounds is both a practical solution and a symbolic stand against the challenges posed by the December arson attack. As the nation looks forward to January 27, many citizens hope the President’s message will bring clarity, reassurance, and plans for progress in these challenging times.

The event will undoubtedly be a test of security readiness and an opportunity for Liberia to showcase its determination to persevere in the face of adversity.
