Representative Priscilla A. Cooper Sharing Moment with Speaker Koffa after withdrawing support from Anti Koffa Bloc
Montserrado County District #5 Representative Priscilla Abram Cooper has officially retracted her support from the ongoing movement to remove House Speaker Fonati Koffa, citing significant concerns regarding procedural shortcomings that threaten the rule of law. Cooper’s decision marks a pivotal moment in the campaign against Koffa, which has faced mounting criticism for its lack of adherence to established protocols.
In her public statement, Cooper clarified that her initial backing for Koffa’s ousting was contingent upon strict compliance with legal procedures, emphasizing her commitment to due process. “My initial decision to support the majority members was based on my interest in some of the clauses in the resolution, with the opportunity of giving the Speaker due process,” she explained, referring to the stipulations laid out in the 1986 Liberian Constitution and the House rules. Cooper pointed out that the month-long effort to remove Koffa has not met the necessary procedural standards, leading her to step back from the initiative.
The push to remove Koffa has been fueled by dissatisfaction among some House members, who accuse him of centralizing authority and stifling open dialogue. Critics argue that Koffa’s leadership style has hindered legislative progress and marginalized various voices within the House.
“It has been over one month, and this procedure has not been followed,” Cooper stated, underscoring her decision to disengage until proper procedures are in place. She warned that mishandling this removal process could set a dangerous precedent for Liberia’s democracy.
Cooper also reiterated her support for President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda, emphasizing the need for stability and good governance. “It is essential that we avoid engaging in anything that could derail the progress of our democracy or undermine President Boakai’s ARREST Agenda,” she added.
In her appeal to fellow legislators, Cooper urged them to focus on their duties in a “lawful, unified, productive, and constructive” manner, calling for restraint until an official plenary session can address the situation. “The people of District No. 5 know they’re my heart, and it’s because of them that I’m doing this—staying on the side of the law to ensure the rule of law is adhered to,” she affirmed.
Speaker Koffa Responds to Cooper’s Withdrawal
In response to Cooper’s announcement, Speaker Fonati Koffa acknowledged her commitment to upholding the Constitution. Sharing a light moment with Cooper after her decision, Koffa expressed appreciation for her dedication to the rule of law and expressed optimism about collaborating with his colleagues for the greater good of Liberia. “We look forward to working with the rest of our colleagues in the interest of our beloved country,” he stated, indicating a desire to move past the turmoil and focus on legislative responsibilities.
