Monrovia, Liberia – The National Campaign Management Team of Julius Kanubah, vying for the presidency of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), issued a stern warning, emphasizing that no clique of fraudsters would seize power at the PUL without facing resistance. In a recent statement, Team Kanubah expressed gratitude for the continued rejection of the “rogue elements” in the PUL leadership by the majority of its members. The team maintained that the widespread rejection demonstrates that attempting to gain power through fraudulent means is not feasible.
Team Kanubah has now cautioned the public, as well as national and international organizations, such as Internews and USAID, against engaging in any transactions with individuals who claim to be PUL leaders. This warning comes in response to a press release by Akoi Baysah and Daniel Nyakonah, who, despite their expiring three-year tenure in November 2022, assumed acting leadership roles at the PUL. Their actions have been contested in court, with a stay order in place regarding PUL activities connected to the previous administration led by Charles Coffey, Daniel Nyakonah, Musa Kenneh, and Akoi Baysah.
Team Kanubah has expressed serious concern over the continued disregard for the court order by Nyakonah and Baysah, highlighting their apparent disrespect for leadership and the rule of law. The team also dismissed Nyakonah and Baysah’s claims that Charles Coffey and Musa Kenneh had resigned from the PUL, emphasizing that their mandate had merely expired in November 2022, and they left their positions only after considerable pressure. Team Kanubah has called these actions a lack of integrity and suggested that these self-proclaimed leaders will be assessed by the PUL membership and the broader society.
Furthermore, Team Kanubah is in the final stages of consultations in response to the impending decision by the U.S. Government, through USAID, to halt funding for PUL project activities via Internews. This decision is rooted in the unresolved dispute arising from the controversial November 2022 Congress and elections, which were held at midnight and based on a disputed Full Membership Register, exposing the PUL to public scrutiny and ridicule.
