President Boakai Extends Support to New UL President, Dr. Layli Maparyan, to Drive University’s Growth

Monrovia, Executive Mansion – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has pledged his administration’s unwavering support for the advancement of higher education in Liberia, following the appointment of Dr. Layli Maparyan as the new President of the University of Liberia (UL).

In an official meeting held earlier today at the Executive Mansion, President Boakai extended a warm welcome to Dr. Maparyan, recognizing her leadership as a pivotal step for the University’s future growth. “Liberia is no stranger to you, and we are thrilled to have you lead this historic institution,” the President remarked. He expressed confidence that under her leadership, UL would see transformative development, particularly in the areas of education and workforce readiness, in line with the Government’s ARREST Agenda.

Boakai also commended the UL Board of Trustees for their dedication throughout the selection process, noting that their unanimous decision to appoint Dr. Maparyan was a testament to their commitment to excellence. “The Board’s diligence was evident, and we are grateful for their careful consideration in choosing a leader of Dr. Maparyan’s caliber,” he said.

Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Senator Numene T.H. Bartekwa of Grand Kru County, introduced Dr. Maparyan to the President and expressed confidence in her ability to tackle the University’s challenges head-on. Outgoing UL President Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh praised the transparent and internationally-accepted standards of the selection process, highlighting Dr. Maparyan’s qualifications.

In response, Dr. Maparyan expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in her and reiterated her full commitment to driving the University’s success. She reflected on her journey with Liberia, sharing that her first visit to the country in 2009 had left a lasting impression, and now, as the new President of UL, she feels honored to serve the nation. “Liberia is no longer just my second home; it is now my first home,” she affirmed.

Dr. Maparyan will be officially inducted as President of the University of Liberia during a special convocation on January 10, 2025, at the Fendall Campus. The University will resume normal operations on January 13, 2025, marking the start of this new chapter in its history.
