Monrovia, Liberia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia, has appointed Dr. Layli Maparyan as the 16th President of the University of Liberia. This historic appointment, approved by the University’s Board of Trustees, was announced today by the Executive Mansion.
Dr. Maparyan, a celebrated academic and global scholar, brings a wealth of experience to the institution. She is currently the Executive Director of the Wellesley Centers for Women and a Professor of Africana Studies at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, USA. Her appointment follows a meticulous search process conducted by the University of Liberia’s Board of Trustees, which identified her as the most suitable candidate for the prestigious role.
In his letter of appointment, President Boakai lauded Dr. Maparyan’s qualifications, integrity, and commitment to academic excellence. “I am confident that Dr. Maparyan will demonstrate her exceptional qualities in service to the University and the nation,” the President stated.
Academic Excellence and Global Recognition
Dr. Maparyan holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Temple University, an M.S. in Psychology from Penn State University, and a Philosophy degree (cum laude) from Spelman College. Her career includes esteemed positions at Georgia State University, the University of Georgia, and a Fulbright Specialist tenure at the University of Liberia in 2010.
Her ties to Liberia are deep, reflected in her recognition with the Distinguished Citizen Award for Service to the Liberian Community (2009) and her marriage to a Liberian.

Dr. Maparyan’s induction as President is set for January 10, 2025. As the first woman to hold this position, her leadership marks a pivotal moment in the University’s history.
