Gov’t Puts 201 MCSS Volunteer Teachers on Payroll Amid Students’ Mass Protest

Monrovia – The Government of Liberia has announced that 201 volunteer teachers of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) will be placed on the national payroll effective October 2026, as intense student demonstrations paralyzed parts of Monrovia on Tuesday.

The decision was announced Tuesday, October 20, following consultations involving the Ministries of Education and Finance and Development Planning, the Civil Service Agency (CSA), and the MCSS.

The announcement comes in the wake of a mass protest by MCSS students, who blocked major roads across Monrovia — including Pipeline Road and other corridors — leaving commuters stranded for hours and disrupting normal activities.

According to the government, the affected teachers will receive their October salaries as regular government employees.

With the latest addition, the total number of verified MCSS volunteer teachers now on the government payroll stands at 409.

The government also announced that eligible teachers will receive their outstanding retroactive salaries one week after the payment of their October salaries.

Meanwhile, authorities said concerns over salary adjustments for currently employed MCSS teachers will be addressed through the ongoing public-sector salary reform process.

The government has called on all teachers to return to their classrooms and urged students to end the protests and resume academic activities as the relevant institutions work to implement the agreed measures.
